ACOM 3373: Pre-Press Technique
Project Type
Print: coil-bound book
Project Description
As part of my degree course load, I took the Pre-Press Technique class. Run by Patrick Brooks, this class was designed to teach me all the things that go into projects as they are prepared for print. In order to understand the pre-press technique behind book printing, I was to create a font sample book to showcase my skills in printing, trimming, and overall presentation.
Because of the nature of the project, much of the production was done by hand. A big challenge in this project was developing the tabs to go at the front of each of the font genres (serif, sans-serif, script, blackletter, etc.) to separate each font genre. These were eventually inserted by hand, and were a great addition to the piece.
As for the book layout itself, I kept it clean and simple - the focus needed to be on the fonts, after all. I used some colour in the first few pages to create interest, but printed the rest in grayscale to keep the costs down. I designed a front page that was interesting and unique, but still simple, so it could be picked quickly out of a crowd and still convey a sense of what the book was about.
