Project Description
WordFest was launched in 1996 to, as their tagline says, bring readers and writers together. It is a week-long festival writers festival that takes place every year in October in the Banff/Calgary areas. It has expanded to include a French-language programme (Festival des mots) and an educational programme (First Calgary Savings Book Rapport). They are also looking to expand to include a Spanish-language programme in the near future.

At WordFest, I was hired as the Webmaster in a contract position, but the job included more than just looking after their web sites - which is where this brochure comes in. Every year WordFest produces an informational brochure about Book Rapport (the WordFest educational programme) for teachers. This brochure is promotional, informative, and a key component of teacher registration.

WordFest wanted a fresh, new look for their 2009 Book Rapport brochure that would set it apart from previous years, and it needed to incorporate WordFest's newly branded colours. I kept my audience at the forefront of my mind when designing this brochure. These were teachers reading this - K-12 teachers. They needed something clean, organized, and quick and easy to read that would tell them everything they needed to know about the educational programme: what was going on, who was hosting events, what Book Rapport was (for new teachers), how to register for events, and who to get a hold of for more information.

The brochure was very text-heavy, which can be overwhelming: organization and visual hierarchy was key to overcoming this hurdle.

I chunked the information into sections that went with each other; I added hierarchy to the text using WordFest's colour scheme to add visual interest; I added borders around the most important sections to emphasize that text's importance; I used as much white as I could to keep the brochure looking fresh and new.
